Goal:

1. Example: Child will not argue
2. Example: Child will do this first time they are told
   

Time: (One minute for each year of the child's life)

Strategy:

1. Someone will sit down with the child and explain that they care about him and that is why they are going to begin something the will help stop a behavior that is causing the problem.
2. Explain to the child the behaviors above that will be timed out.
3. Explain that every time the behavior occurs he will be put in time out.
4. Show him where time out will occur.
5. Tell him how ling time out will last for each behavior.
6. Explain that if he goes quietly and behaves, he can come out when the time is over. If he argues, leaves or whatever, the time will be continued longer.
7. If the child screams, time out will start when the child calms down.
8. If the extra time in time out exceeds 35 minutes, the back-up consequence is a spanking or early to bed.
9. Practice the procedure with the child so he understands.
10. For every 60 minute period that he does not exhibit any of the above behaviors, a reward will be given in the form of a token, prize or pretzel.

Comments: If the child does not go to time out, it is appropriate to prompt the behavior by gently but firmly taking him by the arm and leading him to time out. This should be done with explanation or comment other than, "You did such and such. Go to time out". Time out is a form of mild punishment which, if properly used, is always effective in decreasing unwanted behavior. It is very effective with children who have "out of control" behavior.
